How A Photoshoot Helped Us Find The Right Story

There’s a moment in almost every creative project where you stop talking about what you're making and start talking about how it should feel, and in our experience, that's usually when everything falls into place.

We were reminded of that recently while working on the launch of The Scottish Christmas Songbook.

At first glance, it might seem like a story about photography but it really isn't, it's a story about creative direction.

A good photograph isn't always the right photograph

Earlier this year, we commissioned a promotional photoshoot as tickets for the tour were about to go on sale.

The brief was straightforward ... photograph the artists, create promotional assets, give venues something to market and audiences something to recognise.

The images were beautifully taken and technically, there was nothing wrong with them but every time we looked at them, something felt a little "off."

It wasn't because they weren't good photographs, they weren't telling the truth about the show.

What audiences actually buy

The trust is that people don't buy tickets because six brilliant musicians are standing on a stage, they buy tickets because they imagine how they'll feel.

They imagine arriving at the theatre on a cold December evening, meeting friends, sharing a festive drink before the show, the lights going down, the first note, the laughter between songs and the moments that become part of Christmas.

That's the product.

Not the lineup ... the lineup simply delivers it.

It's a subtle distinction, but it's one that changes almost every creative decision that follows.

The question changed

When we planned the second shoot, we didn't spend more time discussing lenses, poses or lighting, instead, we asked a different question ...

What does this show actually feel like?

The answers came quickly ... warm, joyful, generous, playful and world-class musicians having genuine fun together.

Once we'd articulated that, everything else became easier. The styling, colours, backdrop, expressions ... even the way the artists interacted with one another.

The creative decisions stopped being individual choices and became expressions of one shared idea.

Creative direction isn't decoration

This is where people often misunderstand branding. Branding isn't simply choosing a font, and creative direction isn't merely choosing a photographer, they're the visible outputs of much deeper thinking.

The real work of course happens beforehand ... deciding what someone should feel before they decide what to do.

Whether that's buying a ticket, booking a holiday, choosing a restaurant or working with your business ... that's why two technically excellent photographs can perform completely differently. One communicates information, the other communicates emotion and people remember emotion.

The final image

The finished photographs don't just show who's performing, they capture the atmosphere we've spent months trying to describe.

You can almost hear the music and imagine the conversations, you get a sense of warmth, celebration and togetherness before a single note has been played and that's what audiences buy into.

What this means for our clients

Projects like this are exactly why Everything & Nothing exists.

People often come to us asking for a website, a photoshoot, a press release or a social media strategy and sometimes that is exactly what they need, but sometimes what they actually need is someone to step back and ask ...

"Before we create anything, what are we really trying to make people feel?"

Once that answer is clear, the creative work becomes far more powerful, not because it's prettier but because it's more truthful.

The takeaway

The best creative work doesn't invent a story, it reveals one that was already there.

Sometimes that means writing fewer words or changing the photograph or sometimes it means asking a better question and in our experience, that's usually where the best ideas begin.

At Everything & Nothing, we help creative people, cultural organisations and purpose-led businesses uncover the feeling at the heart of their work, then make sure every word, image and experience reflects it.

The strongest brands don't just tell people what they do, they help people imagine what it will feel like to be part of it.
